CHLOE
Hi, I’m Chloe, and welcome to the first episode of Spill the Beans, where we divulge secrets and discuss topics about food!

This week, we touch on food sustainability! It’s been quite the hot topic ya, especially with the whole 30 by 30 goal recently set into motion.

On today’s episode, we have Ms Yeo Pei Shan, the founder of Uglyfood!

Since 2016, Uglyfood has been saving edible blemished food from supply chains, all to reduce food wastage.

Uglyfood has come a long way in serving this vision, but it wouldn’t be possible without the once aspiring youth that is Ms Yeo herself!

What encouraged me to set up UglyFood is my passion. So two in particular -- food health and environment.

I have been interested in how food can affect our health because of my grandma felling ill. I realise we really need more fruits and vegetables in our diet to stay healthy.

I also wanted to find out what kind of food wastage we have in Singapore. It's a huge pity because since young I have been taught by my grandma to make sure all my food gets eaten up.

So with these two in mind, I wanted to find out whether there’s any edible food wastage in Singapore that I can turn into healthy food.

But it wasn’t, and still isn’t easy getting people on board with the concept of ‘Uglyfood’.

The hardest thing is actually transforming them to take actions on their own, to make sure that they are convinced that they have a part to play, that when they see blemished produce, they will actually purchase it.

But despite challenges, Ms Yeo continues to pave the way for the food sustainability effort and has contributed much to reducing food wastage.

She offers a piece of advice for youths wishing to follow in her footsteps.

MS YEO PEI SHAN
If you want to know something on your own, it’s really good to find yourself some mentors. We were very fortunate to have a mentor that gave us guidance when we first started out.

Change, it starts from within. You yourself have to make sure that on your own, you are taking small actions. Don’t like feel that I must make a huge change, cause when you start small and really do your part, people will also follow suit.

CHLOE
I hope Ms Yeo’s story has sparked something in you to do your part for sustainability!

But till then, thank you for listening to Spill the Beans with me, Chloe, and stay tuned for the next episode! Goodbye!
